What Is a Space Maintainer?

A space maintainer is a small appliance fitted after a child loses a baby tooth early. It holds the gap open so the permanent tooth underneath has room to come through in the right place.

Why the Space Matters

Baby teeth guide the permanent teeth into position. When one is lost too early to decay or injury, the teeth on either side start drifting into the space, and the permanent tooth arrives to find no room — which leads to crowding, impaction or a tooth erupting out of the arch. Holding the space is a far simpler intervention than correcting the crowding afterwards.

Types and Care

Maintainers may be fixed — a band on a neighboring tooth with a wire or loop across the gap — or removable, and they can hold a single space or several. Fixed ones are cemented in and stay until the permanent tooth appears.

Care is straightforward: brush around it carefully, avoid sticky candy and chewing gum, and have it checked at regular visits so it can be removed at the right moment as the permanent tooth erupts.
