What Is Laser Gum Therapy?

Laser gum therapy uses a focused dental laser to treat periodontal disease. The laser removes diseased tissue lining an infected pocket and reduces bacteria there, while the root surfaces are cleaned so the gum can reattach to a clean root.

Why a Laser

Compared with conventional periodontal surgery, laser treatment is generally less invasive: it targets diseased tissue selectively, often avoids cutting and suturing a gum flap, and tends to involve less bleeding and a shorter recovery. Many patients report less post-operative discomfort.

What It Does and Does Not Replace

Laser therapy supports periodontal treatment — it does not remove the need for thorough scaling and root planing, ongoing maintenance cleanings or daily home care. Advanced cases with significant bone loss may still need surgical treatment or grafting. Whether it suits your case depends on how deep your pockets are and how much bone support remains, which a full periodontal charting will establish.
