What Is an Implant-Supported Bridge?

An implant-supported bridge replaces several missing teeth in a row using implants rather than natural teeth as its supports. Two or more implants are placed at each end of the gap and the bridge is secured to them.

How It Compares to a Traditional Bridge

A conventional bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap, and those teeth have to be reduced to carry the crowns. An implant-supported bridge leaves neighboring teeth untouched, and because the implants load the jawbone, it helps preserve the bone in the area where the teeth are missing.

It also means the replacement teeth are not dependent on the long-term health of two natural teeth that are now carrying extra work.

Is It an Option for You?

It depends mainly on bone volume at the implant sites, gum health, and general health factors that affect healing. 3D imaging shows whether there is enough bone or whether grafting would be needed first, and treatment is planned from there.
