What Is Enamel Shaping?

Enamel shaping, also called contouring or recontouring, removes a very small amount of surface enamel to refine the shape of a tooth. It is one of the quickest cosmetic procedures in dentistry — usually a single visit, usually without anesthetic, since only the outer enamel is touched.

What It Can Correct

Contouring works well for small imperfections: a chipped or jagged edge, a tooth slightly longer than its neighbors, a pointed canine, or edges worn unevenly over time. Softening those details often makes a noticeable difference to how even a smile looks.

Its Limits

Because enamel does not grow back, only a limited amount can safely be removed — so contouring corrects subtle irregularities, not crowding, rotation or a large gap. Those need orthodontics, bonding or veneers, and shaping is often combined with bonding so a chipped edge can be reshaped and rebuilt in the same appointment.
